Why Gir Matters

From temple gaushalas to international dairy boards — the Gir's role in modern dairy genetics.

Being a Bos indicus breed, the Gir is naturally resistant to high temperatures and tropical diseases. It is famous worldwide for its milk-producing qualities and is often crossed with Friesian cows to make the Girolando — Brazil's leading dairy breed.

The Gir is one of the principal Zebu breeds originating in India and has been used locally to improve other breeds, including the Red Sindhi and the Sahiwal.
